Going out to eat on St. Pauli? We definitely wouldn't have ended up at Cuneo without a recommendation. From the outside, the restaurant is rather inconspicuous and the surroundings don't immediately suggest good cuisine. Why? Cuneo is located on Davidstraße, right next to Herbertstraße, the street where prostitutes offer their services. Women who don't work here are not even allowed to enter.
Are you following?
Nevertheless, we were curious and so I reserved a table for us. It's always a good idea because the restaurant is often fully booked.
The boss personally welcomes you right at the door. Cuneo has been a family business since 1905 and is therefore Germany's oldest Italian restaurant. Interestingly, the boss speaks Italian with her employees, even though she grew up in Germany herself.
In any case, she took very good care of us throughout the evening. We chatted with her about everything under the sun. Maybe she had a bit more time for us because we were the first guests of the evening at around 5 p.m. It's no surprise that it usually gets very late at Cuneo, considering the area. After all, various theaters are just around the corner, and actors and artists like to come here to unwind after their performances.
Which leads to the question of how boss Franca Cuneo manages to get up early again after these long nights. It's her secret.
Now let's talk about the food: It was really delicious and very good! There are changing offers on the daily menu. For example, we had veal liver with sage butter and homemade ravioli.
And because it was so good, we reserved a table again two days later. That's when we tried the salmon with lemon sauce. Highly recommended!
Extra tip from us: Cuneo also offers pizza. It's actually only intended to take away, but if you ask nicely, you can also get one in the restaurant.
You can tell that we always felt very comfortable at Cuneo. As a reminder, we even received a small photo book as a gift. And that's not the only reason why we'll be happy to come back.
By the way, we weren't just regulars at Cuneo, but also at the Penny-Markt just around the corner. Why there and what great things to discover there, you can find out here...
