DiscoverEU is an initiative of the European Union that offers young Europeans the opportunity to travel by train across Europe. Funded by the European Parliament, the project aims to support 18-year-olds in becoming more independent, refining their social skills, and embracing European values.
There were over 180,000 applicants across Europe, and 35,000 young people were able to receive a Travel Pass.
The pass allows me to use the European train network for seven travel days within one month.
I plan to explore Eastern Europe, starting on August 25th in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. From there, on August 29th, I will take an overnight train to Budapest for four nights. On September 3rd, I will travel for two days to the Romanian city of Bucharest and on September 5th, I will continue for another two days to Sofia. Afterwards, from September 7th to September 10th, I will head to the Turkish capital Istanbul. I will conclude my journey in Greece, with a stop in Thessaloniki on September 11th and Athens on September 14th. I plan to return home on September 19th by plane.
In total, I will spend about 70 hours on the train and cover a distance of more than 4000km on the tracks.
