Franeker has almost 13,000 inhabitants and a very special highlight: the Eise Eisinga Planetarium, the oldest, still functioning planetarium in the world. Eise Eisinga lived from 1744 to 1828. He was a wool comber and wool dyer, but was interested in astronomy and mathematics as a child. He made a name for himself as a highly talented, self-taught amateur astronomer. From 1774 to 1781, Eisinga built the planetarium under the ceiling of his living room. The only stupid thing was that two more planets (Uranus and Neptune) were discovered a few years after it was completed. But Eisinga couldn't install it anymore because the entire area of his living room ceiling was already occupied...
Also worth seeing in Franeker are the town hall, the 11 Cities Fountain and the Martena Museum.
The stop on the mudflats is called Zwarte Haan and belongs to the town of Sint Jacobiparochie.
The stupa is near Hantum. Karma Deleg Chō Phel Ling is a Tibetan Buddhist study and meditation center. A little bit of Tibet in Friesland! Unusual!
