Day 4 West Highland Way - Inverarnan to Tyndrum

Day 4 done. A leisurely 20kms, from Inverarnan to Tyndrum. And, what’s more, reasonably easy walking. Still, the feet are very weary & sore by the end. Feet are amazing things!!

For the first half of the stage we follow the River Falloch. There are many beautiful spots with cascades, interspersed with broad, shallow sections with pebbly bottoms. The water is crystal clear. The river wends its way thru a wide moorland/valley, bordered on both sides by towering hills. There was a bracing, fresh headwind.

The trail takes us thru grazing land (sheep). One big property fringed on all sides by an enormous dry stone wall. It would be about 7ft tall & about 4ft wide at the base, and goes for kilometres. The work involved…..!

We passed the half way point shortly after this. There is a turn off to a town, Crianlarich, but we continued on into the forest. 

The trail then takes us up thru heavily wooded hills. There are quite large tracts of land here committed to forestry. We walked thru one such area which had just been harvested.

The trail then brings us back to the valley floor following the River Fillan, thru some lush sheep pastures. There are several historic sites here including the ancient ruins of St Fillan’s Priory and graveyard and the site of the Battle of Dalrigh where Robert the Bruce was ambushed by Clan MacDougall in 1306!

The final few kilometres we continued to follow picturesque River Fillan and the River Cononish

We’re staying in a cosy B&B tonight. We just bought a few bits & pieces from the local mini-mart. Just going to have snacks in the room for dinner and watch the tennis.

It’s supposed to rain most of tomorrow but at least we have a relatively short day of walking to Inveroran Hotel via Bridge of Orchy.
