Culture shock and typical mistakes

Gepubliseer: 15.01.2018

This morning (15.01.2018) at 12.40 we landed in Hanoi. Exhausted, we went to the baggage claim. We waited a whopping 40 minutes for our luggage and had already come to terms with the fact that we might have to go without it. Ultimately, you just have to give the Vietnamese a little time :D We left the airport loaded with bags and refreshed and made the big beginner's mistake - we spent waaaaay too much on the taxi. Well, regardless, after a 40-minute drive, we arrived at our hostel and by then we had already thought at least 5 times that we were about to be run over or run over people, children, and cows ourselves. Off to the hostel and everything was so new but also so exciting. We immediately exchanged money and got a SIM card and checked into our 14-bed room. In this room, there were two girls sleeping, one was sick, one was listening to music, and two were talking to each other, and we were just thrown in there. It's dirty, messy, smelly, and crowded, but simply awesome. After a short break and a fit of laughter, we went out onto the street in search of something to eat. We realized that in traffic you just have to go with the flow and eventually just step out. Somebody will brake eventually. We spent a few minutes waiting on the side of the road. Suddenly, the word "Pho" caught our eye at a street restaurant. We knew that from our friends' great demonstration. So we boldly went in and placed our order. We got chicken broth with long white noodles, chicken meat, and chives. It tasted very good. An elderly Vietnamese woman in the shop, who initially looked very grumpy, then served us fried dumplings and added lime to our soup. She found it hilarious how we struggled to eat with chopsticks and couldn't get enough of teasing us. Strengthened and 2 € poorer, we made our way back and missed the entrance to the hostel twice. Then we went up to the rooftop terrace where there was free beer and all the hostel guests were hanging out. It didn't take long and we were talking with 2 New Yorkers. We talked about beginner's mistakes, the school system, and Trump, and then we went to bed tired and relieved. Now I'm lying in bed in my sleeping bag liner and wondering how I'm going to survive the night with all this activity :D
