Day 11 - Thursday (czwartek)

Gepubliseer: 06.10.2017

Ksawery

The Deutschlandfunk reported today that the danger from storm Xavier is over, the storm has now reached Poland. Oh great! By the way, it's called Ksawery here and I have to worry that everything goes well. It's fluttering outside.

So it's shitty weather in Warsaw. It's wet, cold, noisy, windy..

Let's see if there's something to see anyway, without me flying away..

Poland/Polonia/Polonium

The periodic table of elements from Marie Curie's laboratory:

There is a gap at atomic number 84 - not for long. The gap will be filled with the discovery of a new element by Marie Curie. She names the newly discovered, highly radioactive element Polonium, in reference to Polonia (Poland), her homeland. In 1911 she is awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this.

The Curie Therapy

Marie Curie tries to use all her insights immediately for the benefit of humanity. She develops radiation therapy against cancer, the Curie Therapy:

The radium belt was used like this:

Marie Curie was born in Warsaw Neustadt (Nowe Miasto), but later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. She conducted research together with her husband Pierre:

She was a researcher, wife and mother at the same time:

University of Warsaw Library (BUW)

It takes a little imagination to imagine today that the botanical rooftop garden of the BUW is one of Warsaw's top attractions. I'll do my best now:

Art Pavilion

Now quickly to the adjacent Art Pavilion, right on the Vistula. I feel at home here immediately:

But at some point you have to go outside again.

Warsaw in the rain

..is beautiful, but only at night.
left the Art Pavilion, right the Vistula

but what is this?

Wrong, not a faucet or something, but..

An acoustic installation. When you walk past it, the parts make sounds, it's true!

You can go back with the metro. You can also slide down(!) here, if you want:
