Our penultimate stop in Malaysia was supposed to be the beautiful island of Langkawi. Actually, we wanted to go to the even more beautiful Perhentians on the east coast, but the rainy season put a damper on our plans.
In 'Tubotel', our accommodation, we slept in so-called 'tubes', colorful concrete tubes with a double bed inside. We quickly got used to the limited space, and the view of the water every morning made up for it. ;-)
The island is not particularly big and can easily be explored on your own. Therefore, we rented a car for the first two days. This was also the first time I could test my driving skills in left-hand traffic, and with an automatic car! After some initial difficulties (I wanted to press the (non-existent) clutch at the first intersection and braked abruptly. The car behind me was luckily able to brake in time...), it went quite well. :-)
On the first day, we took the cable car up to a skybridge on the mountain, from which you should have a great view of the island. Everything here was geared towards tourists, which was especially noticeable in the ridiculously expensive prices for Malaysia. There were also plenty of other attractions to entertain people (like the 3D Art Museum, which we visited). As it was very hot that day, we cooled off afterwards in the natural pools above the Seven Wells Waterfall.
On Langkawi, there are beautiful beaches everywhere, and some of them are hardly visited by tourists. So on the second day, we took it easy and went from beach to beach. You just have to be a bit careful because monkeys are jumping around everywhere, looking for food.
For the third day, we booked an island-hopping tour, where we visited various islands in the area by boat. In the evening, we went to an 'Italian-Asian' restaurant for dinner. I was really craving something 'western' and was happy to see Spaghetti Aglio e Olio on the menu! In hindsight, it was a big mistake, the spaghetti was terrible! Rosario would probably have beaten the chef with a rolling pin for that! (Rightly so!)
