November 20th - 40 km drive along the Great Ocean Road towards the west

Gepubliseer: 20.11.2018

Today, the weather forecast predicted light rain and overcast skies. It was accurate. So we drove along the Great Ocean Road towards the west by car. It's a very impressive route with a view of the sea at all times. There were many construction sites, so we couldn't drive very fast. We made our first stop in Apollo Bay. From here, the first submarine cables were laid to Tasmania. But that's pretty much all you can say about this place. So we continued on our way. After Apollo Bay, the road leads through a rainforest mainly consisting of eucalyptus trees, away from the sea. Signs on the side of the road warn of kangaroos that can hop across your path. And indeed, at one point in the forest, many cars were parked on the side of the road, some of them oddly. People with cameras stood next to the road, looking into the forest. So something worthwhile could come into view. So we also stopped and got out, ready with our smartphone, tablet, and camera. And sure enough, after a short search, we (Stephanie first) spotted two koalas sitting in the trees, one of them possibly with a joey on its body. It was hard to tell for sure. Unfortunately, the possibilities of taking photos with a smartphone in such a case are more than limited. Nevertheless, you can make out a little bit (photos).

By the way, we still haven't seen any kangaroos (so unfortunately still no photo). So we should have stopped the first time....

In Australia, you should never attempt long distances without a completely filled tank. Along the way, a sign showed that the next petrol station was still 30 km away. When we finally arrived there, there was a note on the fuel pump saying 'No fuel'. The GPS that we asked afterwards showed that there was a petrol station about 50 km in either direction. So it was clear, we drove back.

Now we're taking a longer break. If anything noteworthy happens afterwards, there will be an update after this sentence.
