With more or less high expectations, we drove from Bajawa further west to Ende, a port city. Maybe we should have listened to Yohanes*, our host father in Bajawa, and went straight to Moni. The biggest "shock" in Ende: our previously booked hotel. It was the worst accommodation of our trip so far... contaminated, unclean, the staff disinterested, but at least the beds were okay .... We hardly dared to hope for a good breakfast. The best thing about the hotel was the rooftop terrace with a view of the sea. Our mood was at its lowest point. We leave the next morning. So well, let's explore the city first.
With the minibus, of which there are countless in Ende, we drive through the city, in search of food, a supermarket and an ATM that works (difficult task 😕). Mission successful. It was time for the desire for Western food, a club sandwich it should be. And on the way, Paul even got a new haircut ... he chose it himself 😄.
Back with the minibus to the port. We stroll around the night market in the evening ... probably the best thing for us in Ende. Quickly get 2 Bintang beers and then back to the hotel .... Hopefully the night goes by quickly.
*German/European names like Sandro, Daniel, Robert, Marta are not uncommon on Flores. In the 16th century, the spread of Catholicism began through the Portuguese. In the 19th century, the island was sold to the Dutch, who continued the Catholic missionary work. German nuns and fathers have made great contributions to the exploration of the local culture and language. More than three-quarters of the inhabitants are Catholics. Some German is also taught in school.
