Caye Caulker - Go slow - You better Belize it

From Flores in Guatemala, Nathan and I made our way to Belize. Our destination was Caye Caulker, a small coral island in the Caribbean Sea. The island is approximately 8 km long and only 2 km wide. Since 1961, the island has been divided into two parts by a hurricane that created a channel now known as 'The Split'.

There was a lot going on in Caye Caulker. We managed to find a cheap hostel online for the first night, but it was actually not bad. The atmosphere was relaxed, but the so-called 'managers' seemed to be high all the time. They assured us that they were not drug dealers themselves, but if we needed anything, they would call someone who would come over. In the afternoon, we had to run around the entire island for about 3 hours to find accommodation for the second night. I was getting annoyed, but Nathan remained calm and patient with my complaints, so we eventually found a nice and affordable place to stay, albeit only for one night.

In Caye Caulker, there is only one motto: Go slow! Signs everywhere remind you of this, and if you walk too fast in the eyes of the locals, they will kindly tell you to 'go slow!'

We spent most of our time looking for the best and cheapest food on the island and chilling at 'The Split'. There is a bar here, where you can swim, play beach volleyball, or simply laze in the sun.

A snorkeling trip is a must when you're in Caye Caulker. We spent the whole day exploring the underwater world at different spots. It was incredibly exciting and beautiful: colorful fish, corals, a shipwreck, turtles, and my personal highlight, nurse sharks and stingrays. The cute sharks swam in groups around the boats, while the rays leisurely glided along the seabed. I was completely fascinated and followed a stingray with my GoPro, not realizing that I was getting closer to a larger group of sharks and fish. The sharks swam past me without any concern, and I panicked, desperately trying to paddle back. Watching the sharks from a safe distance was much more relaxing.

This snorkeling trip was simply amazing, truly unBELIZEable! Just like the whole stay in Caye Caulker. I'm sure we will be back, and until then... GO SLOW
