Today I slept in a bit because I didn't have to start work until 1 pm. I decided to walk into town and explore some new paths. I discovered a new beach with even fewer people. It's located on the other side of the huge hotel in Plett, Beacon Island. On the hill leading up to the town, there are many newly built large villas that have a direct view of the sea. The houses were surrounded by electric wire fences. There is also a beautiful viewpoint on this hill where you can overlook Plett and its beach. I arrived in town around 12:30 pm and waited at a coffee shop for Paul, who was supposed to pick me up for work at 1 pm. He arrived around 1:20 pm and brought burgers and fries for lunch. Since I couldn't eat it at lunchtime, I had it at the Marketplace. So, it was around 1:40 pm when I was ready to go. Paul mentioned that it's almost not worth it for him to drive 20 minutes to the House of Hope, then I would be there for 1.5 hours, and then he would have to drive another 20 minutes to pick me up. He suggested that I stay here and do something for myself. So, that's it for work today! :D
I sat at the Marketplace, drank coffee, and watched people. Eventually, a man in his 50s approached me. His name is Dan and he is a farmer in the region. Dan has dreadlocks with tangled gray hair, tattoos on his hand, and looks generally unkempt. He asked me what I was doing here and I told him that I am a volunteer and that I want to gain some experience with children here in South Africa. He thought that was great and mentioned several times that young people and the general population should "change their minds". The world needs a "mind change". He then told me a lot about the society here and how it has changed over time. He also told me about his hemp plantations and that he also heals people with hypnosis in addition to his farm. Then he said goodbye to me, took his jute bag, and shuffled away. It's truly incredible who you can meet here at the Marketplace. From businesswomen to workers on break to an old hippie with his own hemp plantation.
After that, I did some office work since we only have wifi here at the office by Steph on the marketplace right now.
