America claims to have three kings in a dignified and tasteful manner: The King of Rock 'n Roll Elvis Presley, BB King, and Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King was shot here in 1968 on the balcony of his room 306 at the Lorraine Motel. He was not yet the king of the city, at least not among the white population; he was the enemy. The Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine and the Museum of Photographer Ernest Withers on Beale Street show how thin the scab on the wound is.
King was here to support the Memphis sanitation workers who were on strike. Two of their colleagues had died due to the complete lack of safety measures. I'm a man.
