San Francisco and Dublin

Gepubliseer: 17.06.2017

After around 3.5 weeks and 6,344 kilometers with the camper in nature, we have now reached San Francisco. And first of all, we had to get used to the feeling of long pants and jackets again, or even jackets. Because here on the Pacific coast, the temperatures were only half as high as in the hot national parks. At night, the thermometer dropped below 10 degrees.

But the lower temperatures didn't mean that the weather was bad. No, quite the opposite. Throughout our stay in San Francisco, we had bright blue skies. Even when we cycled to and over the Golden Gate Bridge, it was pure sunshine.

The good weather alone would actually have been enough. But somehow we seemed to have luck on our side. Because right below the Golden Gate Bridge, some humpback whales were swimming and chasing in the water. From the bridge, we enjoyed the view of the beautiful sea creatures for several minutes. We almost forgot to enjoy the bridge itself and the view of the skyline including Alcatraz.

On the second day, we walked across the city and along the famous Fisherman’s Wharf with its various piers. The most famous Pier 39 was a huge tourist trap with countless shops and restaurants - not at all to our liking. But the reason for our visit was the sea lions, which were lying comfortably in the sun on pontoons there.

In the afternoon, we took a boat to the former prison island "Alcatraz". And by the way, on the way there, a few dolphins swam past us ;-). On Alcatraz, we took a self-guided audio tour that led us through the cell block, the dining hall, and other prison rooms. We were constantly given exciting information about prison life or successful and less successful escape attempts.

On the last half day in San Francisco, we took a short detour to San Francisco City Hall. This huge building was modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Architecturally a real feast for the eyes.

After around 2.5 days, it was finally time to say goodbye to San Francisco and the USA. But our journey was not completely over yet. because we still had a half-day stopover in Dublin.

In Dublin itself, we only explored for a few hours. We walked through the beautiful capital in typical Irish weather (cloudy). Along the way, we discovered beautiful buildings such as Dublin Castle, Christ Church Cathedral, or Trinity College with its bell tower.

The next morning, we finally flew back home. On the flight home, we were able to relive the incredible three months. Really fantastic, what we were able to experience!

With the journey, this travel blog also comes to an end. Thank you very much for following our journey. We are now looking forward to seeing you again after this long time.

And bye... ;-)
