At 11:00 am, we have to leave our apartment and make good use of the time with a quiet breakfast. It has been pouring all night. The approximately 80km drive to Saint John on the Hwy is prone to aquaplaning and because we are not in a hurry, we drive slowly on this rather boring route and arrive at the hotel around 12:30 pm.
The Comfort Inn is located quite ugly in the middle of some obscure workshops, fast food temples, and within sight of Hwy 101. However, the location is ideal for tomorrow's ferry crossing over the Bay of Fundy, as we have to be there at 7 am and it takes only 5 minutes to drive from the Comfort Inn.
We are back in the car shortly after leaving our clothes and driving downtown. For this, it takes about 15 minutes to drive, cross a high bridge over the Saint John River, and then land, for example, on Water Street. Shortly after 2 pm, we found a parking space on a parallel street, got out in the drizzle, threw $2 into the parking meter so that we can walk around here until about 4 pm - if we can stand it that long. Saint John has some very nice old brick buildings and reminds us a little of some areas in New York. There are three large cruise ships in the harbor today and the center is populated by tourists with name tags. However, the weather is really taking the joy out of strolling and after getting a map for the three themed walking tours of Saint John at the Visitor Center, we set off. It's raining harder now and we hurry into the market hall (City Market), where you can also get sweaters, socks, and other stuff in addition to fruits, vegetables, and fish. Well, if you've ever been to a market hall before, you won't be thrilled here now. But at least it's dry! We go out on the other side, stand at Kings Square, from where we see sunny summer photos in the brochure. Today everything is sinking in rainy gray and the pavilion in the middle of the square looks desolate. The rain is starting to get annoying and we need something to eat or something warm to drink.
We go to a pub, order a fixed club sandwich, and sit in the car shortly before 4 pm driving to the Cineplex cinema located outside, where we watch the movie 'A Simple Favor' at 4:20 pm. Nice entertainment on a rainy day.
When we come out of the movie around 6:30 pm, it seems that the world has been pouring down outside for quite some time. It's raining cats and dogs. We crawl the 14km back to the hotel through the streets and lie on the beds at 7:30 pm, turned the air conditioning to 25°C, and turned off the lights at 9:30 pm.
