5th Day | 02/09/2018 Ely - Park City

Gepubliseer: 03.09.2018

Breakfast at the Hotel Nevada was really good. There was a Dennys Diner right in the hotel and we were able to enjoy pancakes, bacon, and eggs using coupons. Coffee was also great.

As I mentioned yesterday, we changed our route a bit and today we are driving to Salt Lake City through the Bonneville Salt Flats and visiting a Tanger Outlet Center in Park City. We booked a HILTON motel near the Utah Olympic Park where the 2002 Winter Olympics took place.

We continued exploring the endless landscapes of Nevada. It's breathtaking to see so much untouched nature and drive for hours on straight roads. However, the roads today were not as empty. We even saw a coyote crossing the road in front of us. It even stopped as if posing for a photo. We were fascinated by this extraordinary sight.

When we reached the Interstate 80 heading east towards Utah, we passed numerous salt lakes that looked like snowscapes. The Bonneville Salt Flats, where many land speed records have been set, is also located there. The completely flat landscape gives a good idea that such records can be achieved here. We didn't spend much time in Salt Lake City, just had a brief look at the city between the Great Salt Lake and the mountains where the 2002 Olympics took place. You can see the effects of the high salt content in this picture.

After the road winds through the mountains for a while, we are back on a plateau right next to the outlet center. From there, we can see the Olympic ski jumps directly.
Two hours later, our bags are nicely filled, except for the wish to bring some "Chucks" home, we were able to fulfill many small wishes.
We quickly checked into the motel to get a taste of the Olympic atmosphere. Our Hampton Inn & Suites motel is part of the Hilton group and is really nice. We have an indoor pool right next to our room, and the plan is to jump in there tomorrow morning.
The Olympic Park is practically within view and you feel a bit like an Olympian in the Olympic Village. From up there, you can look directly down at our accommodation.
Unfortunately, we had to turn around before entering the park because it closes at 6:00 PM. We lost an hour entering Utah and we only have 8 hours behind Rostock.

So we went back down the mountain and looked for something to eat. We found a Whole Foods Market, an organic food chain with a restaurant called "Silver Mine". We had really good food there. This chain was bought by AMAZON and as a Prime member, which I am, you even get up to 10% discount here. Unfortunately, I can't prove my membership as a German member... Hipster stuff. ;-) but very cool. A surfer boy served us.

The food was very well seasoned, they even had German beer. Dad and I preferred Guinness, and mom drove us home.

Tomorrow morning, we'll go up to Olympia again... I'm excited!
