Today, something is different when we wake up. Hmmm... Oh, now it dawns on us! For the past 3 weeks, we finally have a proper bed to sleep in. However, we have some difficulty getting up because the bed is rather soft and we are a bit stiff. No wonder, we're not getting any younger! In particular, Marco has aged a whole year in this night ;-) But enough of that. Now let's get to the day's program!
After Yves' delicious breakfast, we pack our things and head towards Diamond Head. After breakfast, Evan (our Airbnb host) comes in and cleans the second room. So far, we've had a surprising visitor in the apartment every day. But back to the topic. Diamond Head is a volcanic crater from ancient times that can be climbed on foot. From the top, you have an amazing view of the ocean and Honolulu. Absolutely stunning!
It is also undeniable that the hills were used - and possibly still are used - as observation or defense positions.
After descending, we join the marathon route of the Honolulu Marathon 2016, which started at 5:00 in the morning. We seamlessly blend into the crowd of runners. By the way, it's 2:15 PM when we join in at kilometer 38.5. And if you're wondering about that, that's good. Because while the winner has already finished at 7:09 AM, our companions have been on the course for 9 hours and 15 minutes... they are literally running on fumes. And they are probably far from the last ones, because there is no official closing time. Anyway, we reach the finish comfortably at 10 hours and 4 minutes. However, we have only covered about 14 kilometers.
By the way, it's warm and we are soaking wet. So now we're going to Waikiki Beach to swim and cool off. Afterwards, we go back to the apartment to shower and get some money for dinner. In the Japanese restaurant, we order steak and rice. Interesting: The steak comes in small pieces with vegetables on the table grill and we only have chopsticks :-)
At Moose's Pub & Cafe, we toast to the successful day while watching NFL. Mahaloa together!
