It rained last night. But this morning we had breakfast on our balcony. We left just before 9 o'clock. Actually, we didn't plan to drive that far. Eden was our first destination. It was nice there too. The photos were taken there. But then we went further. Mallacoota, that was the next place. Most of the time we drove through a rainforest, mostly consisting of eucalyptus trees. But either we didn't find the right town center in Mallacoota or there wasn't one. So we drove the 25 km dead-end road back. Lots of curves, very bad road - like in New Zealand, just not as beautiful. Rainforest, you know. A kangaroo sat on the roadside on the way, and just as I drove by, it started running towards us. I stepped on the gas, so nothing happened. But I didn't take a picture of it. Everything happened too fast. Then we continued driving towards Melbourne. Again through the rainforest. It felt like at least 200 km of rainforest today. Stephanie then saw a wombat. On the roadside, unfortunately, no proof photo again. Somewhere along the way in this forest, we suddenly heard a loud noise, shrill, high frequency. Could our car be broken? But when we opened the window, it was clear: it came from the forest. There must have been millions of chirping cicadas. After a few hundred meters, it was quiet again - until after a while it all started again from the beginning. It came in such intervals.
Now we are in a place called Lakes Entrance, have checked in at a motel, and will stay here for two days to rest. It is about 320 km east of Melbourne. As the name suggests, it is at an estuary into the sea. There is also a '90 Mile Beach' here; at the beginning of our New Zealand trip, we reached a beach of the same name after traveling about 10 km on a gravel road. Here you just have to walk across a pedestrian bridge. We'll see if these beaches can be compared.
We found out: they can't! The one in New Zealand was wilder. The photos give a little impression.
Unusually, our motel has a bistro where you can get something to eat. That's where we are right now.
