The city, referred to by locals as “La Capital,” is a kaleidoscope of various cultures and diverse neighborhoods. On the cobblestone streets, it's easy to forget that Santo Domingo is in the Caribbean. We take a short city tour by taxi and pass by the Presidential Palace. We see the Faro a Colon - Columbus Lighthouse. It looks like a cross between a Soviet-era apartment block and a reconstructed Maya ruin. Our next stop is Los Tres Ojos - the three eyes. These three wet caves with dark blue lagoons connected by passageways lined with stalactites offer a breathtaking view, especially if you manage to arrive before the crowds do. The statue of Christopher Columbus commemorates the discovery of the island, now known as Hispaniola. Notably, there seems to be a significant police presence and tourist security at nearly every street corner. We stroll through a few alleys and visit two churches. The Museum of Christopher Columbus is closed today. A coffee in the Zona Colonial surrounded by many, many pigeons concludes our city tour, and a taxi takes us back to the port just before the rain begins.

fanky-on-tour

<geo:lat>19.755142352439805</geo:lat><geo:long>-70.53758552810547</geo:long>

Summer, sun, sunshine for 2 1/2 weeks

Punta Cana

Dear ones,

I hope you all started the new year well and could enjoy your Christmas time. First of all, we wish you a Happy New Year and are very glad that you are accompanying us again this year and eagerly following along as our life in the United States of America progresses. Just to note: 7 months have already passed! Wow! Time goes by so quickly and we can hardly believe that we are slowly starting to think about our return home. Because flights, etc. do not book themselves...

But now first to something more exciting: How did we spend Christmas and New Year's Eve? Until November, we weren't sure where we wanted to spend these two important days of the year. Between returning home, Hawaii, skiing, and the Bahamas, a lot was under discussion. But in the end, we decided to spend a few days relaxing without much travel. Because as nice as traveling from place to place is, it is also quite exhausting.

Thus, we boarded the plane on 19.12.24 and flew via Charlotte to the Dominican Republic. More specifically, our destination was Punta Cana. We spent 10 days there at a resort, simply enjoying a bit of peace, summer, sun, and relaxation. We can't tell much about those days because we spent most of our time resting on the beach in the sun. However, there was one highlight. While the Christmas atmosphere in the resort was very nicely captured (Christmas music, Christmas decorations, etc.), the Christmas dinner was also very nice. A lot of effort was made to ensure that we could have a lovely Christmas away from home. But our actual highlight arrived on 25.12. Because Christmas is officially celebrated here only on 25.12. From the resort, it was announced that Santa would come to the beach at 11 a.m. that morning. Of course, we wanted to see that. But what we saw was incredible: Santa Clause arrived at the beach by HELICOPTER and then got out to distribute gifts to the children. We had never seen anything like that in our 26 years or 31 years of life :D So definitely a funny highlight of the vacation.

On 29.12 after 10 days of relaxation, we continued to Orlando. There, we joyfully met Julian's parents, who had relatively last minute decided to visit us. With them, we spent three days at Treasure Island and then two more days at Cocoa Beach. We took a few outings, including a sunset kayak tour on New Year's Eve, ate raclette, enjoyed a fantastic fireworks display on the beach, visited a few National Recreation Areas, saw the famous Daytona Beach, visited the Kennedy Space Center, and attempted to witness a rocket launch (which unfortunately got postponed). As you can see, we had a great time just the four of us!

On Friday, 03.01.25 it was already time to say goodbye again because Tina and Wolfgang continued on by bus to Miami to enjoy the second part of their vacation. For us, it went straight to the airport, because the next long-awaited visit was waiting for us. Upon arrival at the airport in Orlando, we welcomed Ale and Ruwen. The two had spent the last two weeks with Ale's family in Mexico and had now made a stop on their way back to Germany in Orlando. Together with them, we spent Saturday at Walt Disney World and Sunday at Universal Studios Orlando. These were also two wonderful days with them, filled with fun, adventure, roller coasters, film music, and movie sets, fireworks, immersing in our own childhood, and shared time for which we are very grateful. Even though it is now quite an expensive enjoyment, we can highly recommend both parks. Such a trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Studios is not something one does often in life.

Since Sunday evening, we are back in Pittsburgh and will stay here for a while. However, there are a few things planned in Pittsburgh before we go traveling again. This Monday marked the return to work for Julian AND me. Julian back to his normal job at Bosch, and I have now started a new job (no more volunteer work). But more on that in our next blog post...

Lastly, we would like to thank our four visitors. Tina, Wolfgang, Ale & Ruwen, we were thrilled that you came to visit us and that we could spend such a wonderful time together. This is absolutely not a given for us (just like with our other visitors last year), as we don't exactly live around the corner. And it is always a special time to have visitors from home because that is something we miss here. Friends & family. So it's also nice to say that we will already be returning home THIS year :)

See you soon!

Punta Cana

Punta Cana

Punta Cana

Punta Cana - Christmas

Punta Cana - Christmas Dinner

Punta Cana - Christmas Dinner

Punta Cana

Treasure Island - Adventure Golf

Treasure Island - Adventure Golf

summer

puntacana

dominicanrepublic

florida

orlando

treasureisland

cocoabeach

kennedyspacecenter

waltdisneyworld

universalstudios

Mr. & Mrs. Häufele in the USA

<geo:lat>18.5600761</geo:lat><geo:long>-68.372535</geo:long>

La Romana / Dom.
VACATION
:-))

After
we spent 5 months with AIDAbella in Northern Europe, the Canary Islands, and
the Caribbean, our assignment ended today in the capital of the Dominican
Republic and we have almost 3 months of vacation ahead of us. At 1 pm, we had a transfer from the ship to our
accommodation. We lived in the middle of the colonial center of Santo
Domingo, across from the Monasterio de San Francisco, the ruins of the
first monastery on the American continent. We rested briefly and then took a stroll through the city. It's Sunday, the city is bustling, people are sitting everywhere, talking, playing, and
listening to loud music. We walked through alleys with colorful houses,
past colonial buildings to Columbus Parque. Here, a statue of Christopher Columbus awaited us right in front of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo. It was the first church in the New World and has been part of the colonial city since 1990 and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. We couldn't visit the interior because the church is closed to visitors on Sundays. We walked along the pedestrian zone, Calle el Conde, which was also crowded with many visitors,
street performers, and sellers. Slowly it got dark, the city lights came on, and we made our way back.
At Monasterio de San Francisco, there was live music today and we didn't even have to go there because we could hear every word loud and clear in our accommodation. At some point, we fell asleep.

Monasterio de San Francisco

12/02/2023 - Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic

12/02/2023 - Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic

... throughout the old town

in Columbus Parque

Cathedral of Santo Domingo

12/02/2023 - Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic

Calle el Conde

colonial ...

anne & ben um die welt

<geo:lat>18.4860575</geo:lat><geo:long>-69.93121169999999</geo:long>

TAG 8 La Romana

TAG 8 LA ROMANA

The port city of La Romana is located on the western coast of the Dominican Republic, which shares the second largest and most diverse island of the Greater Antilles, Hispaniola, with Haiti. It all started when my father dragged me to Amsterdam to visit his younger brother. The time there was quite pleasant, but the bus ride there, uff.

This was all before Flixbus and co. It's still the same today, but of course my father booked the night bus. It's cheaper. It was hell as a child. You can't sleep, can't stretch out, can't distract yourself with the scenery because it's dark, and then you arrive in the morning at some apartment hoping that the brother is awake. I didn't find it optimal.

Well, I had a dislike for long-distance buses. Okay, I don't like buses in public transportation either.

Nowadays, I somehow got used to it. I found it quite pleasant to drive around the Dominican Republic. It's a way to get to know the country a bit.

The bus went to Sosua. I had to find a new means of transportation to Cabarete. There are taxis, but they are always expensive. Then there are small buses, as I later found out. The cheapest option. But I didn't know that at the time, I hadn't seen it either. Well, and then there are a lot of motoconchos. Motorcycle taxis. They are a bit expensive. Not as much as a taxi, but not exactly cheap either.

A bit unbelievably, but I sat on this 125cc device with my bulky backpack and off we went at about 100 km/h towards Cabarete. It's an experience.

Cabarete is very touristy. There are lots of surf schools, it's probably the ultimate kite and windsurf beach. There is a real estate agency on every corner, and for the first time in my life, I saw a Bitcoin store. That such a thing exists. There is a currency exchange every five meters. Not to mention that the beach is full of beach bars. And on Saturday evening, there's a party, full blast. There's a big road going through the town and the motorcycle riders make a lot of noise, super uncomfortable, you want to go straight to the beach.

The hostel I stayed in was made of bricks and had a small tower that resembled a castle.

So, I was at this beach. I had never been surfing before. And I noticed that there's a form of surfing that I really want to try. It hasn't been around for long. Like two years or so. It's called wing surfing, not windsurfing. It's a mix of wind and kite surfing. I'll put in a picture.

Whoa, 95$ for one hour. I only did it once. It was really awesome. But damn expensive, like everything there. So, I mostly just chilled out. Long beach walks. And swimming and just arriving in nothingness. Just sitting under a palm tree and doing nothing. I've been working all the time since I was on that ship.

So, Cabarete quickly showed me everything it has to offer. On the last day, I ran into Anja again at the airport. She introduced me to the German carpenter who is building a clinic in the middle of the jungle. If I'm interested, I should come over. That will definitely happen, but for now, I'm going to Panama and then take a 10-hour bus ride to Costa Rica to meet old friends. Once Klaus, an old acquaintance from the rental barracks where I used to live, and coincidentally the deckhand who was fired shortly after my birthday in Marie-Galante is also in Costa Rica.

It looks like a person.

Cabarete

Cabarete

The hostel

Motoconchos

Really old thing

Cabarete

Cabarete

Cabarete

run-yourself-away

<geo:lat>19.744614162984963</geo:lat><geo:long>-70.4073885375642</geo:long>

Santo Domingo

is

Even before I got on the plane in Guadeloupe, I was approached with 'German?' This has happened to me a lot since I've been on the road. She said to me, 'Well, tall, blond, white, and a red passport.' She is from Switzerland. We had a very pleasant chat during the flight. She told me a lot about the Dominican Republic. It was very pleasant. She is currently staying in a carpentry workshop run by a German master carpenter through couchsurfing. Somewhere in the jungle. She told me to come by. I was planning to, but they had a low workload when I wanted to go. A month later would work. It would have been exciting. I find it nice to receive such spontaneous offers. We said goodbye at the bus stop, she headed to the north of the island and I went to Santo Domingo.

The first thing I come across in Santo Domingo is the German-Dominican exchange center. Paulaner beer and white sausages. It continued like that. There are and have been many German-speaking people in the hostel. I don't know how, but we somehow got into conversation. Hello Lili from Cologne and hello Jan from Hildesheim. Potatoes are everywhere. We talked about plans and vacations. Hostel stuff.

Then the star of the evening came. I went into the kitchen for a moment and smiled at a guy, and we started talking. And he surprised me a little. Adam, clearly German, has trained as a carpenter in France. But Adam's appearance was, well, he looks quite similar to me: he wears similar clothes, he still has long hair, the same beard, the same earring just a bit smaller and slimmer. Somehow I always meet craftsmen. And somehow we always get along great. The craftsmen I meet are usually syndicalists. Adam and I got along very well.

He has traveled a lot in Cuba. Everything is different there. 400% inflation but the price of fuel remains stable. But no one can afford a car. That's why there are still Ladas and Wartburgs and older cars there. They have a super 85 which is apparently for very old machines. It is also a country with very high poverty but the lowest crime rate. Adam was very impressed. I might also go to Cuba someday. But not anytime soon. He gave me a 3 peso bill with Che Guevara on it.

Then it really started.

We got another beer and sat down in a square. Eventually, the beer ran out and we wanted to go to the restroom. Then suddenly a guy stands in front of me wearing a mask and looking grim. I look over to Adam and he is threatened by another man with a handgun. Super absurd to write this. In that moment, my mind was like, 'Okay, chill, they're going to rob you now. Stay cool. He has a gun in his hand.' At that moment, the guy in front of me starts rummaging through my pockets. Adam doesn't stay calm, he says something like, 'That's not what life is about.' At that moment, I see that the gun looks very, well, plastic. I suddenly feel very sure of myself, partly because I was drunk, and with my finger on my head, I say, 'Pull the trigger.' I'm not proud of myself for that statement. Something possessed me. End of the story, one of them gave me back my mask, my fanny pack was hanging on my back, there wasn't really anything in the pockets, and then Adam and I walked away. Super weird situation. The element of surprise wasn't enough. I won't forget that easily. But we were a bit careless hanging out somewhere at 1 o'clock in the morning. Well, that was my first day in Santo Domingo.

Unfortunately, Adam flew to Lisbon the next day. I will definitely see him again.

The hostel serves breakfast. Typical hostel, you meet two people at breakfast who want to visit the same sight as you. We went to the National Park 'Les Tres Ojos,' which is in the middle of Santo Domingo. Underground caves with lakes. Look at the pictures, it's super beautiful. Leave early enough, then it's not too crowded. Afterwards, I took a tour of the colonial old town. Santo Domingo is probably the oldest western city in the New World. It's okay. In the evenings, there's a lot going on. Live music everywhere and people dancing in bars or on terraces. Lots of movement, lots of energy. Quite pleasant.

But what I really find pleasant is the hostel atmosphere. The people I meet there. Many interesting people. Of course, many on a short vacation, wanting to take as much as possible from one place to the next. But also long-term travelers or dropouts. It's really great to get a taste of this life for a short time.

More of that, please.

Next stop: Cabarete

is

how

it

looks

usually.

Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo

It depends on the ceiling

Santo Domingo

run-yourself-away

<geo:lat>18.478367625704674</geo:lat><geo:long>-69.8844301700592</geo:long>

20.02.2022 – 26.02.2022: Dominican Republic, Punta Cana

Calendar:

20.02.2022 – 26.02.2022
Catalonia Royal Bavaro, Punta Cana

20.02.2022
Flight Puerto Rico, San Juan – DomRep, Punta Cana, returning Mustang and picking up the car in Punta Cana

21.02.2022
Bavaro

22.02.2022
Macao Beach

24.02.2022
Higuey, Boca de Yuma

26.02.2022
20:45 Return flight via Dusseldorf to Zurich

Noteworthy:

On the day of departure (20.02.2022) from Puerto Rico, we drove to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan at 10:30. Once there, we returned our lemon yellow Mustang after driving 2919 kilometers. The car was really an eye-catcher, the Puerto Ricans were amazed every day and showed their admiration with honking and hand gestures. Even at the security check in Palmas del Mar, we were waved through without further inspection thanks to the Mustang. The security would have loved to get in during our frequent day trips.

The departure from Puerto Rico and the entry into the Dominican Republic went smoothly, it was the first time on our trip that we did not need Covid tests. The plane was also larger, for the 35-minute flight from San Juan to Punta Cana, JetBlue Airlines used an Airbus A320. The legroom was exemplary, really unusual...

The car rental in Punta Cana at interrent was very slow, we waited for about 1 hour to finally get the car.

For the last week of our six-month trip, we are going royal. The Catalonia Royal Bavaro is an all-inclusive hotel, which is not usually our style, but we can endure it for a week. Moreover, we can also take trips at any time. Apparently, we are the only hotel guests who have rented a car, the other guests prefer the sweet lethargy of doing nothing and stay within the highly protected hotel walls.

When we arrived at the hotel, we were immediately classified and categorized: Each guest receives a numbered plastic wristband, without which nothing is possible. At least 6 different colors are distinguished, and depending on the color, the service staff treats you more efficiently or not. We did very well with our pink wristbands...

The architecture of our hotel is appealing; there are no tall buildings and very spacious garden and pool areas. Numerous à la carte restaurants offer a good selection, and the uncomplicated reservation is made directly via the internet. Considering the many hotel guests, the food is surprisingly good and varied.

On the day after our arrival, we went to Bavaro to buy a few things for daily needs. We forgot the shower gel, so we planned to buy it the next day at Macao Beach. We found what we were looking for in a small shop near the beach, but the small bottle was priced well over $20. Even for the (supposedly) public parking lot at Macao beach, they charged $10 for an hour of parking when we left. We negotiated the price down to $2. Tourists are systematically exploited here in the Dominican Republic, no wonder with an average monthly income of $400. Another way to make money is to wait at traffic lights and quickly clean the windshield without asking when the light is red. We have never had cleaner windows in the last six months.

On 24.02.2022, we took a longer trip to Higuey and Boca de Yuma, which was ideal because it was raining lightly in the beginning. The ingenious windshield cleaners had to think differently as the windshields were already clean due to the rain. Hard to believe: Now they actually sold windshield wipers as an alternative at the intersections, luckily the ones on our rental car worked perfectly...

One striking thing in the Dominican Republic is the especially prevalent poverty, with people living in very basic buildings and painstakingly cultivating their fields. Trash is stored right next to the houses, what a shame.

The driving style of the car and numerous motorbike drivers in Higuey exceeded everything we had experienced so far. Red lights and one-way streets are generally ignored; the law of the stronger (or cheekier) applies. It didn't matter that we once got lost in an unmarked one-way street...

In Higuey, we visited the monumental cathedral. When we returned to the car, someone had left a small dent in our front fender. I wonder if that will cause any complications when we return the rental car tomorrow, Saturday. In any case, we have taken out insurance.

After visiting Higuey, we drove overland to Boca de Yuma past huge sugar cane plantations. We also saw Urus occasionally, but never in the same density as in Puerto Rico. Boca de Yuma is a small picturesque fishing village on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic. Before driving back to Punta Cana, we had a small meal here.

We relaxed again at the hotel for the last two days. Actually, there would have been a direct flight to Zurich at the same time as our return flight with Condor on 26.02.2022 (around 9:00 p.m.) with Edelweiss. But the Swiss airlines seem to be doing too well: The direct flight would have cost more than twice the Condor flight (around 3,500 CHF), and with Condor, we also got the premium class as a supplement. So we gladly accept the stopover in Dusseldorf and the longer travel time of 4 hours due to the layover.

On the way back home. We are looking forward to it!

Catalonia Royal Bavaro, our terrace

Catalonia Royal Bavaro

Catalonia Royal Bavaro

Catalonia Royal Bavaro

Catalonia Royal Bavaro

Catalonia Royal Bavaro

View of the last two days

at the hotel

sabbatical-sylvia-und-dirk

<geo:lat>18.6387109</geo:lat><geo:long>-68.3472007</geo:long>

Aida Caribbean ship cruise 19.12-02.01.

Yes, I did a ship cruise.

Abendessenbeispiel

urlaub

reisen

weltreisen

<geo:lat>18.735693</geo:lat><geo:long>-70.162651</geo:long>

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

Yesterday Saturday we were rejected at the PUI airport because we missed the 14-day pre-stay by one day. Now we were curious, because American Airlines (AA) rebooked our flights as follows:

From PUI to MIA: Departure: 14:21 Arrival: 16:55
From MIA to LAX: Departure: 19:35 Arrival: 21:54

So we had about 2.5 hours in MIA for the connecting flight. Since these were 2 different booked flights, we also had to pick up our baggage at baggage claim in MIA and check it in again. It could be tight and we drove to the airport in PUI with anticipation at 12:00.

The car rental company also contacted us again on Saturday. In the meantime, the tone had changed: failure to pick up the car on time would be considered a 'No Show', which would inevitably result in the immediate termination of the contract without any refund. Out of goodwill, the deadline for picking up the car was extended until Sunday evening at 23:59 (We paid for the rental car 50 days in advance....).

Already on the way to the PUI airport, countless emails from AA came in: Delayed departure from PUI. Wow, that's just what we needed. And the delay got longer with each email: In the end, we didn't take off until 16:00. So it was clear that we would miss the connecting flight in MIA at 19:35 anyway.

That's why I rebooked the flight from MIA to LAX again (!) in PUI: Here we got the last two seats (departure from MIA: 21:55 arrival LAX: just before midnight. Well, I thought, AVIS will probably turn a blind eye if we are about half an hour late.

In MIA, we quickly changed gates, which worked really fast for once. And we had enough time until the departure (21:55 to LAX). Suddenly, the mobile phone started going crazy again. As it turned out, our rebooked flight from MIA to LAX was also delayed. In the end, it didn't take off until 23:30 in MIA and landed in LAX at 02:30 (now Monday).

After we had our luggage, we went to AVIS with a slightly uneasy feeling: I already had all possible scenarios running through my mind... We arrived at AVIS around 03:15 and entered the entrance door in a fighting mood.

There was only one person present, a younger man for whom it was a matter of course that due to the COVID pandemic and the resulting regular flight delays, the car rental companies also have to show flexibility. So out of sheer joy, I gave him a $20 tip and he brought our car from the huge parking lot and explained everything to us.

So around 04:15 we arrived at our hotel in Venice Beach. The reception is not staffed at night (not until 08:00). So we looked for an open Starbucks and drank coffee until 08:00. Our first night of freedom after a long, long time...

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

2nd attempt: From Punta Cana (PUI) via Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX)

sabbatical-sylvia-und-dirk

<geo:lat>33.9932584</geo:lat><geo:long>-118.480598</geo:long>

Flying during the COVID pandemic on 11-9-2021

Today we woke up very early, at 4:45. The goal was simply to sell us a hotel membership for $24,000 (20 years). We politely declined. However, Dirk had to use the restroom in this upscale part of the hotel (private club) and promptly came back with the broken door handle. The personal assistant seemed more embarrassed than Dirk.

5.9.2021 Romantic dinner on the beach

That was truly an experience and very beautiful. A four-course meal on the beach. Salmon carpaccio after a delicious amuse-bouche and then surf and turf. And to finish, a tarte madeleine. Truly a delight.

In the first week

Excitement right from the start. Dirk's phone inexplicably broke (motherboard). Off to the phone shop in Punta Cana. Irreparable. Great, no more backup possible. Dirk buys a new iPhone 8 Plus and painstakingly installs all the apps by hand. The banking apps are causing stress, but with the support of UBS, it works. Thank you very much. On the first day after the purchase, the newly acquired phone also seems to be broken. So, off to Techpoint in Punta Cana again (costs 50 euros for the taxi each time). The shop was supposed to be open according to the information, but it was closed. It's dark in the taxi and Dirk realizes that the brightness was simply set to 0, but then you really can't see much on the display. Especially not on the beach. Stress for nothing, once again.

In the second week

Now our credit card company is causing stress. We transferred a larger amount of money for the vacation (debit balance) and now they believe that we want to launder money. Therefore, the card should be blocked. After extensive phone and email communication, fortunately, the situation calms down without us having to involve our lawyer Denis.

sabbatical-sylvia-und-dirk

<geo:lat>18.6654185</geo:lat><geo:long>-68.3959708</geo:long>

Trip to the Samana Peninsula 6.9.2021

On Monday of the second week, we took a trip to the Samana Peninsula.

After a 2-hour bus ride, we continued on a speedboat to Bacardi Island (the name says it all). Yes well, I was also on vacation. 😂 I just had to switch off.

As you heard, I went to the Dominican Republic to get my re-entry permit. It was a forced vacation, so to speak. Sounds a lot worse than it actually is though. 😆

Was a very good time. Along for the ride was my friend Katy. So exciting to see her fly for the first time! We even flew over the Bahamas and got to admire it from above. 🙌🏻😯

For 10 days we were in a resort in Punta Cana and spent most of our time swimming in the pool, lying by the pool, sitting on the beach or eating the awesome tropical fruits. You can't imagine, but the mango was just so good and delicious, I miss it already. 😕

We did two tours during our time. One tour went to Saona Island the other tour went to Playa Cabeza de Toro. For the tour to Saona, we were picked up early in the morning with a bus that took us to the port of Bayahibe. Our tour guide transferred to a speedboat with our group and then we arrived on the island after half an hour. It was so beautiful there! 😍

Everyone took pictures in this beautiful scenery. Then we had a good lunch and after that many cooled down in the turquoise water. 🏝 That is anyway my favorite. 🙃 The full day trip was super successful! We took the catamaran back afterwards.🙂

The second trip was a few days later (last Saturday). We went snorkeling! 🤿 In the town of Playa Cabeza de Toro we could also do scuba diving. The pictures show you a little impression. You have the opportunity to see fish and coral at depths of up to six meters while breathing normally 🙂 And yes - I found Dori! 😂

Before the action, I was a little nervous. I was a little scared that my ears would pop being that far down and that I wouldn't be able to take the pressure. But everything went well. 😂

The rest of the time we rested. The people were super nice! On Wednesday we went back to the ranch. Who still has not noticed: Yes, I will stay here for a second year. My current plan is to come back to Germany next year in August. But let's see where else I will be taken 😉.

We have a family camp going on right now. My family left again the same day I left the ranch for my little vacation.

Next Friday the new students will arrive. Now there are already 39 students for the upcoming school year! It's going to be very different. A big difference from our last school year where we were only 14 students. But let's see and wait how it will be. 🙃

For those who added a second year, it's a little different anyway. We will only have three classes or so with the new students. Other than that, we have our own classes. Of course, now we have much more of a task to be there for the new students and help them out. But more info on that another time. 🤗

Be blessed and see you soon! ☺️

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Dori

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Zwangsurlaub 🏝/ forced vacation 🏝

Salo’s Journal

<geo:lat>18.5600761</geo:lat><geo:long>-68.372535</geo:long>

"I´m good!", sage ich lachend.

<img src="https://vakantio.de/uploads/b74d62e23737b5054b860072c0e421b1_large.jpg" alt="1.

How does it work?"

<img src="https://vakantio.de/uploads/1ea42872e855e21d95e5e656607a0684_large.jpg" alt="2.

<img src="https://vakantio.de/uploads/9bd61d38aecc9bcd5607ebe9523f7401_large.jpg" alt="3.

Diesmal möchte Julian mal was neues ausprobieren.

Adult only Bereich

Spaziergang

Pool

Taubenbesuch

Geckobesuch

Also wollen wir morgen schnorcheln.

Julian muss alleine essen

Bitte was?

mein erster Stand-Up Versuch

noch lächelnd...

Sturzgefahr!

letzter Wendys Burger

letzten Stunden im Flughafen

Selfie-Time

unser Flieger

Unser neuer Untermieter!

Jetzt ist unsere Reisezeit erst einmal vorbei. The last day at sea before we arrive in La Romana again. Chill on the ship one more time, and ride the exercise bike in the fitness center one last time. In the evening, there was a gala dinner in all restaurants. The farewell party took place on the pool deck from 9 pm onwards. We stayed on deck until almost 11 pm. Afterwards, we had a small snack at the La Mare pizzeria. The ship arrived at the port of La Romana around midnight. In the morning, we were the first to pay $10 per person for entry into the Dominican Republic. Our booked taxi transfer was more than punctual. We were already heading towards Punta Cana around 10:30 am to our next accommodation. Another week of beach holiday at the Iberostar Hotel.

schoens-reisen

<geo:lat>18.5600761</geo:lat><geo:long>-68.372535</geo:long>

Samana

After the gym on Monday evening, we had reserved a table at Buffalo. The food was delicious, and the steaks were cooked perfectly. After dinner, we went back to the cabin. We watched magician Peter de Ville's show on TV. The theater was completely crowded. The alarm clock rang again at 6:20 a.m. for our next excursion and tendering in Samana. Unfortunately, the island greeted us with rain. We started in an open safari bus. It was cool that a lot of water had accumulated in the roof. In the first curve, I was already completely wet on the right side. We stopped at a beautiful rocky coast where we were served coconut milk. Then we went for coffee tasting. The hinterland of the island looks quite poor. We visited another beach where we could swim before returning to the ship. Unfortunately, it rained heavily on the return journey as well. Back on the ship, we had to take a hot shower before going to lunch.

schoens-reisen

<geo:lat>19.2030757</geo:lat><geo:long>-69.3387664</geo:long>

Start in La Romana

Our taxi transfer was booked for 12 o'clock noon from Santo Domingo to La Romana. Before departure, there was still time to follow the first half of the SC Freiburg match. Our taxi driver was very punctual and everything went smoothly. Shortly after 1 pm, we arrived at the terminal. We were allowed to board the Aida at 2 pm after confirming once again that we had not been in China in the last 14 days. Our cabin was ready for occupancy. This time we had booked a Vario cabin and we are still satisfied with our balcony cabin 5144 - despite the metal balcony. There are quite a few people from the new federal states on board. It must be school holidays right now. We spent the rest of the day very comfortably and prepared for our vacation. Sunday was a sea day. We went to the gym at 8 am to ride the exercise bike. After showering, we went to have a hearty breakfast. We spent the rest of the day reading, eating, and sleeping. After all, we had to get up early on Monday. On February 10th, we were in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. We met at the pier at 8:30 am for the Jeep safari. We set off with two jeeps. The first stop was a so-called shopping center. But before the shopping started, we had a fruit punch with rum. In the store, there was all sorts of trinkets to buy. And everything at half price. Our next stop was Murphy Hill. Some people in the car felt sick before we reached it. The journey there was not suitable for people with back problems. On the way, we passed through some villages. Former slaves live here in really poor conditions. After that, we went to a coffee plantation. Here we gained insight into the coffee bean production and processing. Thanks to our ship's 'translator', communication was not a problem. The group we were with was somewhat strange. After the coffee plantation, we went to the Dunn's River Falls. James Bond already bathed here in Dr. No. Some people in the group, including Matthias, climbed the waterfalls in the cool water. Then we went back to the ship. In the evening, we visited Peter de Ville's magic show before falling into bed completely exhausted. Today is another sea day. A few minutes ago, we found out that our next stop is Cozumel, not Costa Maya as planned. The weather is apparently too bad for Costa Maya. Greetings from Lisbon.

schoens-reisen

<geo:lat>18.4073894</geo:lat><geo:long>-77.1031345</geo:long>

Dominican Republic

Approach landing NYC

After 22 hours, we finally arrived at our first destination. At the Real Aeropuerto Hotel in Santo Domingo. Against all expectations, we quickly went through immigration in NYC and were at the gate half an hour before our flight to Santo Domingo. The flight took almost 4 hours. The immigration process in the Dominican Republic took longer. Of course, not all counters are open after midnight. We finally arrived at the hotel around 1:30 a.m. Today at 12 p.m., our taxi will come to take us to La Romana for Aida.

Approach landing NYC

New York

schoens-reisen

<geo:lat>18.48605749999999</geo:lat><geo:long>-69.93121169999999</geo:long>

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

Dom Rep

Visiting a cigar factory, then heading to the beach..

Visiting a tobacco factory

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

11th Day La Romana (Dom Rep)

Karibik 2020

<geo:lat>18.735693</geo:lat><geo:long>-70.162651</geo:long>
