Mulu National Park

We traveled to Mulu in the Heritage Area of the National Park by small plane from Kuching. Far away from civilization, there are only a handful of resorts or accommodations, a small airport with a short runway, and the National Park headquarters in the middle of the jungle and close to the border of Brunei Darussalam.

On the first evening, we went on a night walk with a guide where we discovered a variety of insects. Apart from stick bugs and other insects, we saw many frogs and a small snake (allegedly a venomous Borneo Pit Viper) in the trees. It was exciting to stroll along the jungle pathways equipped with a headlamp and eagerly search for new creatures.

The following day, we went on a guided tour to the Lang Cave and Deer Cave. It was impressive to see how large the caves are in the limestone mountains and how dark it gets when you move away from the entrance. It almost resembles lunar landscapes, so close to the vibrant jungle. The caves are home to two to three million bats, which then flew out of the caves after the evening rain and put on a fantastic spectacle. Each swarm flew out in different formations into the approaching night.

On the morning of the third day, we embarked on the Canopy Walk at heights of 25 to 45 meters. Over 19 suspension bridges, we went from tree platform to tree platform, seldom seeing the floor of the rainforest due to the abundance of trees and foliage. It was dizzying and breathtaking at the same time.

We then took another leap by small plane to the state of Sabah, and from here, Kota Kinabalu, we will soon provide you with our travel news.
