As part of our camping vacation on the Adriatic, Julius and I also visited the city of Ravenna. The city was once the center of the Roman Empire, albeit towards its end, and is known for its mosaics. Accordingly, we wanted to see them. Ravenna used to be by the sea and had a large port. Over the years, however, the coast in front of Ravenna silted up due to the Po River delta, so it is now several kilometers away from the sea.
In Ravenna, you cannot buy a ticket for a single attraction, but only for multiple ones, which we quite liked. So we visited the Basilica of San Vitale and the nearby Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, the Neonian Baptistry, and the archbishop's chapel located in a museum next to the Cathedral. These are all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
All these places are really beautiful! They are full of amazing mosaics and not very crowded. Once we lost our ticket, we searched the entire way but couldn't find it again. Fortunately, we still had the receipt, and a nice saleswoman kindly issued us a new one without any hassle. Very kind!
