East Frisia 2.0 2. Day

The morning began very quiet – no birdsong, no bleating of sheep. As a morning person, I set off before dawn to enjoy the tranquility. There was a strange atmosphere over the meadows and the whole area. Some mist in the air and so still, as if I were alone in this spot on earth. A woman with three small dogs on a leash was the only human I came across. There were no sheep to be seen on the meadows behind the dike.

I enjoyed this break and then listened to an audiobook set right here. Neuharligersiel and the surrounding area are the setting of the story. The title is "Crab Bread and Sailor’s Death". Many places felt instantly familiar to me.

After a delicious breakfast, we headed to Aurich. We used to visit the EUROPAHAUS with our kids there xxx years ago. They offered various activities back then that were very appealing to us BW-ers during the Pentecost holidays. This institution still exists – the garden has become a bit more enchanted; the amphitheater remains unchanged.
Aurich even has a harbor, which I didn’t know. And a castle – I only saw it today. The city center has undergone some changes; familiar shops no longer exist, and new ones have appeared. The church is currently being renovated and was not accessible; the tower stands further away from the church nave than expected. I still like the side streets, the rampart remains unchanged, and many things are still the same as they were 30 years ago. Aurich has remained a small town full of beautiful memories.
And since it lies on the way home, we also visited the ETERNAL SEA. It is the largest raised bog in Lower Saxony and a special attraction here. A boardwalk leads across the bog to the actual lake. Again a dreamlike stillness, only interrupted by passing geese. Dragonflies and very small young lizards crossed our path. Very few visitors were out and about. On the way back, it was almost mandatory to stop for an espresso and Friesen cake. Delicious!

A brief stop to visit the castle in Dornum. Unfortunately, everything was closed due to construction work. Then the rain finally started. So quickly, we hurried to buy ingredients for the fish stew for dinner and headed to our accommodation. We had a game night with "Ticket to Ride" – a game we were unfamiliar with. And then this day passed way too quickly.

See you soon
