From one paradise to the next - Welcome to Hawaii!!
After a nine-hour flight with a short layover in Christmas Islands, we arrived in Hawaii. It's currently winter there. Winter means about 28 degrees and sunshine. So it's very bearable. We booked our hostel in Germany to apply for the US visa. We stayed at "The Beach Waikiki Boutique Hostel" right in the heart of Waikiki. The beach was only three minutes away from us - so it's very bearable. From the airplane, we could already see the many mountains and greenery. O’ahu is just one of the islands in Hawaii. Since we only had one week, we decided to stay there, even though Maui was also very enticing.
There are many things to discover on the island. O’ahu is particularly known for its huge waves and the associated surfing competitions that take place regularly. However, these are in the north. We rented a car - a Ford Mustang - for a day and headed north to the North Shore to take a closer look at the professional surfers. There are many different beaches and bays there. The waves are truly breathtaking - we had never seen anything like it before.
You can also do a lot of hiking and mountain climbing on the island. We climbed Diamond Head - a route takes about 30 minutes. Once at the top, you have a great 360-degree view of the whole island 😍. Definitely worth it.
Of course, we also spent a day at Waikiki Beach. There are quite a lot of tourists there because that's where all the hotels, restaurants, and shops are located. Still, it's very beautiful and it is one of the most famous beaches.
Since the Super Bowl was on Sunday, February 4th, 2018, we mixed with the locals and tourists and watched the game together. It was quite an experience.
It was a short but great encounter! However, Hawaii is not cheap, as you can see from the accommodations and shopping.
It's definitely worth investing time and staying longer, especially to visit the other islands.
On to Los Angeles!!
