Since the last blog post, we have been swimming a lot and even rode jet skis once. We saw two very large, beautiful stingrays and a group of beautiful, cute dolphins😊.
The sea was very rough and we flew more than we rode😉.
We went snorkeling in the sea water pool. There were many fish and a few very large sea cucumbers. Apparently, there are also stonefish in there.
I think I saw one but I'm not 100% sure...
Then we woke up early and flew to Nuku Hiva.
Nuku Hiva is located in the Marquesas. It is beautiful here and the vegetation is very green. Our bungalows don't have windows, only mosquito nets. No wonder I was woken up by a rooster at 5:20 am☹.
On the 26th, we visited all the villages on the island. The largest village has 1,100 people... We went with a pick-up truck. Or rather, in the back on the cargo bed. There are seats there. The weather was a bit rainy, so we got wet. Luckily, despite the rain, it was warm. We learned a lot about the culture. Actually, the culture has only been around since about 1987, as the French colony banned the language, religion, and culture and destroyed everything. By the way, there used to be cannibals here, and there are probably still remnants of human bones deep in a banyan tree (ick).
Yesterday, we hiked to a waterfall. The village there is very, very basic. It only has 8 inhabitants. But it is a paradise for animals and plants. There are wild chickens, roosters, chicks, goats, and much more. There are plantations and trees everywhere: grapefruits, bananas, chilies, coconuts, and everything else you can imagine. The waterfall is one of the highest in the world. You can see a cave from the hiking trail. Inside, there is a white, elongated thing. The guide told us that those are three sarcophagi. So, three wooden coffins from over 500 years ago! The warrior is lying in his coffin, the other bones are lying next to it. No one knows why. By the way, this was only discovered 2 years ago, before that it was just a legend. You can't climb up because the path was destroyed by the people who lived there at the time.
Today is the last day here and we won't do anything exciting anymore. This adventure is over now. Tomorrow we will leave for the next island.
Its name is Tetiaroa.
