Crete Day 10: May 13th - Chrissi Island

خپور شوی: 19.03.2018

Our main goal in Ierapetra was to visit Chrissi Island. There aren't many other excursion options there anyway. We had visited an agency the day before that offered trips to the island. Although there was also a ferry that crossed daily, the agency promised us a smaller, more private boat with fewer people. And at the same price. That sounded good!

Ready for the island

The excursion was set to start at 11:30 a.m., so we could sleep in and enjoy breakfast on the balcony. Unfortunately, the lady from the agency called us to inform us that she had to cancel on us because they didn't have enough people to set sail. So we took the ferry at 11 a.m. But that was okay too.

Thanks to the off-season, I can only say that again. The ship was well-filled, but not bursting at the seams, as it is supposed to be in the high season. We left the harbor on time and set off for the island. It wasn't far away, and after a short journey, Chrissi Island came into view.

We now had time until 5 p.m. to explore the island. We headed straight to the famous 'Golden Beach', which should be the most beautiful beach on the island. We were not disappointed, the beach was really beautiful. White sand, fantastic turquoise clear water. However, what was somewhat annoying were all the beach loungers. Fortunately, they weren't all occupied and a little further back it was quieter. You could also rent loungers, but 10 euros were too expensive for us here! So we spread out our towels. Unfortunately, apart from the umbrellas, there was no shade anywhere. And the sun was really scorching today! After a while, we packed up our things to look for a shadier spot. So we walked back to the other side of the island where the ship had docked, and found a shady spot on the beach there. The beach there wasn't as beautiful as the Golden Beach, but it was a lot less crowded.

Our time on the island was slowly coming to an end, 5 p.m. was getting closer and we made our way back to the ship, which took us back to Ierapetra.

Conclusion

The trip to the island was quite nice, but there are also plenty of beautiful beaches in Crete. Whether I really want to spend the money just to be transported to an island together with a horde of tourists is questionable. After all, the ferry ticket costs 25 euros per person, and if you want a lounge chair on site, you'll be another ten euros poorer. Again, this applies: doable during the off-season, probably hopelessly overcrowded during the high season.

Next destination: Xerokampos!
