Leon - a vibrant university town

Publisert: 02.12.2017

Since it's only a three-hour bus ride from Matagalpa to Leon, we decided to stop by here as well. We initially wanted to skip Leon, as the city is always seen as the smaller, uglier sister of Granada.

But we were surprised. Leon has an atmosphere that we have never found in Nicaragua before. The parks fill up in the evenings and people gather here with friends and family. Numerous street artists sell paintings or jewelry, and you can try street food on every corner.

In addition to the countless universities, Leon is known for just as many cathedrals and churches. Some are very beautiful and well-maintained, while others are falling apart in the middle of the city. Leon also has several museums, one of which we visited, namely the art museum. Many people also come to Leon to race down a nearby volcano with a board. Joice tried the expensive fun for 30 euros and was thrilled. They hadn't promised us too much.

But the highlight in Leon was something completely different for me. By chance, we stumbled upon a French bakery. From that moment on, we stopped by at least once every day. They didn't sell real bread, but incredibly good baguettes and croissants. After 4 weeks of tortilla, pastries are a real luxury.

Since the temperatures in Leon make you sweat while eating, we definitely need to cool down again. That's why our next stop is back at the beach. Until then, adios amigos.
