Day 4 | 21.03.2019 | Key West - Homestead

Ippubblikat: 23.03.2019

Today it was time to say goodbye to all the wonderful things we found here in Key West and on the Keys. Super relaxed atmosphere, great Caribbean flair and pure vacation mood. We would love to take the weather with us, lots of sun and always above 25 degrees, I can work with that and my sunburned head still shows the effects. But hey, we wanted summer, we had it.

Today I took the wheel of our Dodge for a change. 3.6 l engine, lots of horsepower, it's like a real street cruiser. One last photo of our dreamy cottage, probably already the best accommodation of the whole trip ahead.

We could review the entire Keys on the way back and even solve a mystery. On one of the islands, we saw a blimp-like vehicle in the distance on the ground. Now on the return trip we saw it in the sky, gliding majestically slowly.

Shortly before Homestead, the Everglades begin. And of course, we wanted to go on an airboat ride. In a brochure, we found discount coupons for an Alligator🐊 farm, which saved us $3 per admission. So off we went. And we quickly bought the tickets. You could also see some highly poisonous snakes and lots of alligator babies.

Did you know that Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles share a habitat? I didn't know that either.

Then we got on the airboat and after a few meters the driver stopped and there was Caiman everywhere, Legian over there, Alligator over there, madness. All in the wild but in such abundance that it almost seemed unreal.

He then showed us what his airboat V8 propeller Chevy engine was capable of for about 20 minutes and skillfully rotated the boat over and over again, causing the muddy water to splash into the boat - he had warned everyone multiple times. Luckily, no alligator came aboard. 🤪 It was a unique experience, the landscape of the Everglades, birds like I have never seen before. A unique and very untouched world that should be treated respectfully in the future.

We had a bite to eat (Gator Tail Bites), learned a little more about gators and crocodiles, and then we continued.

We wanted to make a little detour to Homestead Miami Speedway, where the finale of the popular NASCAR series in the USA takes place every year. But we could only look at the area from the outside because there was no event happening there.

On the way to the hotel, we made a detour to Biscayne National Park because it was on the way. It mainly extends in the Biscayne Bay in the water with a unique animal and plant world. From here, you even had a view of the Miami skyline.

A large group of young people were preparing for a paddle tour and sunbathing in the middle of the road. It looked strange somehow, but that's America, you do what you want and don't care about others, I love it.

We found a nice table in the shade, it was very hot again, and ate our Honey Buns...

The final stop of today was a Garden Inn Motel in Homestead, unfortunately with very bad Wi-Fi, but we can handle that for a day. Tomorrow we will go back to the west coast to the Gulf of Mexico.
