A local gave us the tip to try the BBQ at Grand Ole. For $5 per person, you can bring your own drinks, including alcoholic ones. The restaurant itself is located in a former workshop. We ate exclusively outside.
As soon as we arrived around half past 6, we could see the large smokers at the entrance. There was already a small line forming. They opened at 6pm.
Since we had already eaten Mexican food in Old Town, we weren't very hungry. We both ordered a brisket sandwich with coleslaw. The sandwich was reasonably priced at $12. We promptly received our order, which we could customize with pickles, pepperoncini, onions, and BBQ sauces. The brisket was chopped into small pieces instead of sliced. Steffi would have preferred it sliced, like at Lonepine Smokehouse. The sandwich and coleslaw were both delicious. They smoked the meat with oak wood. Unfortunately, they didn't sell the rub they used.
If we ever visit San Diego again, we will definitely visit Grand Ole again.
