The Avenue of the Volcanoes

Објавено: 04.07.2018

Cotopaxi, a snow-capped, active volcano with a height of about 4900m, is located on the volcano road in Ecuador. Several volcanoes are lined up here. This includes Quilotoa with its beautiful lake in the crater. In total, there are over 50 volcanoes in Ecuador - 18 of which are still active.

Climbing up to the hut on Cotopaxi is quite a challenging endeavor: we park at an altitude of 4500m and climb up to 4900m in zigzag lines. Apart from the altitude, strong gusts of wind and hail showers make the ascent difficult. It's cold and the multiple layers of clothing are heavy. But after 1 hour, we made it. We have reached the hut, at the edge of the glacier. Unfortunately, due to the weather conditions, the further footpath is closed and we don't have climbing equipment with us to ascend over the glacier. For all interested: due to climate change, this glacier is expected to melt in 10 years.

After this exertion, we spend the night in a wonderful hotel in Isinlivi, a hiking area in the Andes. We learn how cheese is made here and are amazed by the landscape.

On our last day in this area, we drive over rough terrain, on dirt roads to the Quilotoa crater. The descent down to the lake, which was formed after the last volcanic eruption (= water table), is very steep, which is why we take horses on the way back.

Now we are in Banos, a charming small town in the Andes. There is a lot on offer here: waterfalls, cycling and hiking tours (we have chosen bicycles), horse riding... and natural hot springs with temperatures up to 40°C. One of these 3 natural pools is located at the foot of a waterfall. It is great to relax in the hot water and watch the illuminated waterfall after the sun has set in the evening. Salsa music is played and life is 'buzzing': families with children, tourists, couples - everything is represented.

Tomorrow we will head to Tena, a city in the Amazon region. Here we will have to do without internet for 5 days.
