Today we checked off two places on our "To Do" list. First, we visited the world-famous Emirates Palace Hotel. Pure luxury! You rarely see so much gold in one place. The hotel complex is over a kilometer wide and cost approximately $3 billion. This is where the super-rich stay. Since the hotel is right across from our hotel, we could easily walk there and take some photos of the Etihad Towers along the way.
In the afternoon, we took a taxi to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, a must-visit for every Abu Dhabi vacation!
The construction of the mosque was one of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's last wishes. He provided $350 million from his personal fortune for the construction. Covering an area of 224 x 174 meters, the mosque can accommodate approximately 40,000 worshipers.
In addition, you can admire the largest carpet here (about 5,600 square meters and 47 tons), the largest chandelier with Swarovski crystals (15 meters high), and the second largest dome above a mosque in the world. The impressive structure is also beautifully illuminated at night.
