Fun at the Rere Rockslides

Publicēts: 13.10.2017

Hello everyone,

Here I am again. After getting our swim rings, very cute in donut design, one with chocolate glaze and one with pink glaze, we set off towards the Rere Falls and Rockslides. Once again, we drove through a very scenic area with peaceful green hills and lots of cute lambs. We arrived at the Rere Falls around lunchtime, a very beautiful waterfall. After another 5 minutes drive, we arrived at the Rockslides. And there was no more tranquility there. The Rere Rockslides is a natural rock formation that has been formed into a slide by the constantly flowing water. It is about 60m long and ends in a natural pool. When we arrived there, some people were already sliding. However, they looked a bit better equipped than us, as they all had wetsuits, like those used for surfing or diving, and foam boards for sliding. But we didn't let that discourage us. After eating our usual lunch and inflating the swim rings, we also ventured into the water. Oh boy, it was so cold. My feet tingled as if a thousand needles were being stuck into them. But since we had spent the money on the swim rings, there was no turning back. And I'm so glad about that. It was so much fun sliding down there. If anyone wants to see a video, I can happily send it to them. Another backpacker was kind enough to take some videos of us. After sliding three times and being completely frozen, we changed back into dry clothes and dried up a bit in the sun. Then we continued following the Scenic Route towards Whakatane. This part of the journey was also beautiful, and we drove for a long time through a gorge and along a stream. However, a large part of the road was unpaved, which made the drive a bit more challenging again. But it was still worth following this road instead of the highway.

That's it for the adventure part of this day. In the next post, I'll talk about the city of Whakatane and our experiences there.

See you soon,

Your Jessi
