Zanzibar - day trip around the island

Tihchhuah a ni: 07.10.2023

Dennis and Annick are on a family vacation with their parents in Zanzibar. They had booked a day trip for today and asked us if we would like to come along spontaneously. Of course we came along 😉.

Our first destination was a spice garden. Here we were shown the local plants, spices and fruits. We also had the opportunity to try the fruits. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side. It rained almost constantly while we were in the spice garden. This didn't dampen the mood and we had a lot of fun 😁.

We then went to Stone Town and from there took the boat to Prison Island. This island is located in front of the city's harbor and was previously used as a prison island and quarantine station. During the reign of the Sultan of Oman, tortoises were settled on this island. Of the four turtles that were settled back then, only two are still alive today - the oldest is 198 years old. They made good use of the time and proliferated - today there are around 150 of them living on the island. We were able to touch the animals and feed them salad. Our guide Harry even showed us how to massage turtles.

It was now afternoon and we were all very hungry. Back in Stone Town we all had dinner together. After refreshment, Harry led us through Stone Town. Stone Town is the old town of Zanzibar City and a world heritage site. The residence of the Sultan of Oman had been located here since 1840, and Zanzibar was also an important trading center for spices and slaves. Today you can clearly see both Indian and Arabic influences. In addition, Freddie Mercury was born here. There is a museum in the city in his honor, which particularly pleased Anja and Burki (Dennis' parents). It has been a dream of theirs to visit this museum for a long time. We also visited the night market, where countless stalls offer freshly prepared specialties. Unfortunately, due to the late lunch, we were all too full to try anything 😂. Finally, we strolled through the small streets to the Darajani Bazar.

We had a really great day. It was indescribably nice to spend so much time with friends, to see Dennis' parents again and to get to know Annick's parents. It was an indescribably nice feeling to be surrounded by people you like again after 5 1/2 months traveling around the world. Thanks!
