In the creek behind the 'Mahitahi Lodge' there are eels. They can grow over 1.50 meters long and sometimes leave the water. The landlady lured them with bacon for demonstration purposes. A creepy pleasure.
Today, we drove to the northwest of the South Island to Cape Foulwind (about 350 km), in mixed weather conditions, occasional rain, around 17 degrees. The road meandered more or less along the west coast. You don't get there particularly fast. But the passing landscapes, always different and beautiful, made up for the long drive.
A visit to the 'Pancake Rocks' and 'Blowholes' near Punakaiki is a must. Only at high tide water fountains spout from holes in the cliffs, like geysers, with a mighty roar. Impressive.
Today we are staying in a cottage called 'The Steeples', right at the cape and on the cliff. There is nothing else here except a pub, which we will visit soon...
