At quarter to one (at night) we left for Belize City. It was an 8-hour drive and we had to go through customs. At 3 o'clock in the morning, when we could finally sleep a little, we were lovingly awakened and lined up. One by one, we went to immigration to handle the exit formalities and get a stamp in our passports. Unfortunately, there is no way around the departure fee of 25 dollars, either pay or you can't proceed. The whole process took about 1 hour until we could finally continue.
Accordingly tired and somewhat annoyed, we arrived in Belize City and were immediately approached by all kinds of people. A bit too much for the beginning, but the people really meant well. They asked us where we needed to go and showed us the way. In general, everyone was very open and friendly to us.
Then we took the ferry to the small coral island Caye Caulker.
I have to say, it was love at first sight. The sea is incredibly beautiful, great beaches, colorful houses, and the people are very relaxed. Cars are out of place here, you either ride a bike or drive small golf carts.
We stayed at Bella's Backpackers, which has its own access to the sea and offers free canoes and bicycles. Unfortunately, there were no more free beds, so we got a mattress on the floor :D There are also a party hostel next door. At 7 o'clock in the morning, the music is turned on, no more sleeping :D
