To Esperance on the Southern Ocean

Ebipụtara: 17.11.2018

15.11.2018

Hyden was just a stopover on the way back to the ocean. So today we drive around 400 km to get to the South Coast of Western Australia.

There are larger distances between the individual highlights. On the way, the same picture always appears: flat, wide country, huge cereal fields, bushland and countless eucalyptus trees. So it is also on this trip - nothing exciting.

Esperance is located on one of the most beautiful coastlines in WA. After our arrival, we stroll along the waterfront promenade with its lovingly designed green areas. Right across from our hotel, there is a sculpture in the shape of a whale tail. Everything looks very well-maintained. There are picnic areas with gas grills and playgrounds for the little ones. Along the main street and the waterfront promenade, there are beautiful large Norfolk pines. Then we stroll along the shopping street, where the sidewalks are folded up at 5 p.m., everything is already closed.

This day comes to an unspectacular end. In the evening, we need our jackets right by the sea.

A day of relaxation on a dreamlike coast

16.11.2018

This morning, we drive along the Great Ocean Drive, which attracts tourists to this remote corner of the country. The 40 km scenic drive passes by beautiful bays between flat granite landforms with turquoise blue sea and snow-white sandy beaches. One dream beach after another. From the lookout points, there are fantastic views of the ocean, with islands rising from its deep blue water. Today it is mostly cloudy, and I imagine what it would look like in sunshine. Simply indescribable and hardly put into words, you have to see it for yourself. The color of the sand and the sea create unique contrasts.

Unfortunately, the overall cooler temperature at and in the sea keeps us from swimming, but that doesn't detract from the beautiful experience!

On our way lies the Pink Lake, a large salt lake, whose surface is supposed to glow pink. However, we don't see it in pink, but snow white. The color depends on certain weather conditions, which are not optimal now. What a pity!

In the afternoon, another highlight awaits us. We drive to Le Grand National Park, located east of Esperance. Paradise white beaches in turquoise coves, framed by gray-brown granite rocks and green shrub heath vegetation, await visitors here. Even we feel happy in Lucky Bay with this unreal scenery. The view into the nearby Thistle Cove is equally spectacular.

There are also some remarkable granite formations, such as the individually standing inwardly curved Whistling Rock and the hollowed peak cap of Frenchman Peak.

On the way back, a long-awaited wish comes true - kangaroos give us the honor at a reachable distance on the road. Having been to Australia and not seeing kangaroos is not acceptable. Today is a really lucky day!

The only thing that didn't play along so well is the weather - 19°C and clouds, in the evening it even rains.

By the way, the four oldytravellers send warm greetings to all their readers of this blog at this point! We are delighted that you are following our journey so numerous and regularly. By now, we are much more relaxed here on the southern route than we were in the north at first. Our second car is doing a great job, tire punctures have not been an issue so far. That's how we want it to continue until the end!
