Day 27 - Sydney, here we come!

Buga: 24.01.2023

The day starts early as we have to drop off our rental car in Sydney. The drive into the city already presents heavy traffic. We find out that the Avis shop is located in the large complex called The Star Sydney, which houses a large parking garage, a luxurious casino, hotel, spa, and some restaurants and bars. Trying to drop off our car, we feel like Asterix and Obelix searching for Passierschein A38. The building is huge, with multiple elevators leading to different parts of the building, and in the end, we only find the Avis shop thanks to a kind air conditioning installer who accompanies us, as he thinks the way is too complicated to explain.

Finally, after returning the rental car, we head to the bus stop to go to our hotel in the Kings Cross district (Aussies call it "The Cross"). The neighborhood is known for its red light and party scene, but we are pleasantly surprised when we arrive, as we see many classy bars, restaurants, and cafes.

After a short stay in the hotel room, we walk to George Street. We walk along it until we reach the Town Hall and admire the beautiful building.

Then we go to the Queen Victoria Building and see the Royal Clock. The building is very well preserved, and the Neo-Romanesque architecture by Scottish-Australian architect George McRae provides a strong contrast to the modern buildings in the surrounding area.

Afterwards, we continue to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, with a view of the Opera House. We spend some time at the harbor and watch the lively activity.

It is already late afternoon, and we walk back to our hotel through the Royal Botanic Garden to get ready for the evening.

In the evening, we drive out to Coogee Beach and attend a German yodeling event at a bar. It's funny that there is an Australian who has lived in Cologne for two years and can give us some insights about Australia.
