Day 7: Depoe Bay, Devils Punchbowl, Newport, and Oregon Dunes

Oñemoherakuãva: 22.09.2016

After our rainy day yesterday, Day 7 started dry but foggy in Depoe Bay. A small fishing village known for its gray whales off the coast. With a visibility of 20m, we didn't have much hope :) but we still managed to spot one :D

By the way, the village is famous for being featured in the movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' starring Jack Nicholson.

We then headed to Yaquina Head, a must-visit lighthouse. On a beautiful day, you can enjoy breathtaking views and have a good chance of spotting whales, but as I said, only on a 'beautiful day'...

Despite the poor visibility, we were lucky enough to encounter a group of seals taking a break in the calmer bay.

Continuing on #101 to Newport, our destination for the day. The second largest city on this stretch with 10,000 residents. The highlight here is the historic 'Bayfront'. You can observe crab fishermen at work and buy fresh fish directly from the ship. Or enjoy seafood at a local restaurant by the harbor ;)

Last but not least, and hard to miss, are the sea lions that have settled at the pier. You can hear their arguments for the best spot throughout the neighborhood :)

After this spectacle, our journey took us to the Oregon Dunes, where we wanted to set up our camp for the night. But before that, we had to explore the huge sand dune landscape :)

The dunes stretch for 60 mi along the coast.

Preview of Day 8: Gorgeous coastal areas and arrival at Redwood National Park.
