The Holy Scripture as a Travel Guide

Oñemoherakuãva: 27.11.2021

If you follow the Holy Scripture, you will find many historical sites in Jordan. The most famous ones are definitely Mount Nebo, from where Moses had a good view over the Jordan to the promised land, including Jericho and even Jerusalem.

From Mount Nebo, you descend steeply towards the Dead Sea (from +800 to -400m). In this barren area, only Bedouins with donkeys and camels live today. One wonders how they make a living...

Passing Magdaba, you reach the Dead Sea, which, in times of pandemics, appears dead not only in the water but also on the shore. No one in sight far and wide. But the water is clean and pleasantly fresh. So a little swim is taken (not in - but in this case, on the water). Afterwards, the salt, which quickly becomes noticeable on the skin (pleasantly), is rinsed off with water from the drinking bottles.

From there, we follow the Jordan River upstream, heading north, to visit Bethany, the site of John the Baptist. The presumed baptismal site of Jesus is on the Jordanian side. But from the river, which once carried a lot of water, only a small stream remains today. And so Israel is actually just a stone's throw away. The Jordan is exactly the border.

From there, it takes about 45 minutes to return to the capital Amman, which welcomes us again with its lively streets at the beginning of the evening. An impressive day, where the biblical story is within reach. Good night.
