Day 8: from Lake George/NY to Rochester on Lake Ontario

Foillsichte: 23.09.2018

The last night was again rather short. Sleeping is overrated anyway, so now I only sleep for a maximum of 4-5 hours per night...

Fortunately, my husband is driving all the way. I wouldn't be fit for it anyway.

But anyway... it is what it is...

In the morning, we got up relatively early again and got ready to leave, so we just had to go for breakfast and then we could start driving.

The breakfast was worth a look: Only (!) sweets! Although there was a really wide selection, it was somehow borderline. I also think that the whole plastic dish thing could be improved. But nobody asks me.

Well, even though it had cooled down quite a bit overnight and it was also raining, we had breakfast outside under a shelter.

The elderly couple sitting next to us eventually started a conversation and asked us which country we come from. When we answered, the older lady said that she thought we were either from Germany or from Holland.

So cute! Everything is the same for Americans.

From the breakfast table, we called our friends from Oberhausen. Via video, using Whatsapp. What technology can do these days... 😉

Since we hadn't booked accommodation for the evening yet and we didn't really know where exactly we wanted to go, we looked at the map again and then decided to go to Lake Ontario. If you're already there, you should at least take a look at the smallest of the 5 great lakes.

We quickly booked the Country Inn & Suites by Radisson in Rochester via a hotel portal (once again, it's amazing what you can do with the numerous mobile devices you carry with you nowadays) and then we were off.

So we set off in the rain at an uncomfortable 58 degrees Fahrenheit and the weather continued like this for quite a while, so we switched to toll roads as there wasn't much to see anyway.

At some point around noon, the cloud cover suddenly cleared again and it got really warm within a very short time. In order not to sit in the car all day, we spontaneously made a detour to Oneida Lake, the largest body of water (199 square kilometers) that is completely in the state of New York.

There is a very nice state park right on the shore, which we drove to and where we took a break from driving in beautiful weather and let the sun shine on our faces. It was really great and since it was Friday early afternoon, we were more or less alone there.

We then set off again towards Rochester, where we arrived at 92 degrees Fahrenheit at around 5:00 PM. That was really hot... and really humid...

So we just quickly brought our small luggage into the room and then the question arose: What to do with the rest of the day?

Since I found the last two days in the car way too boring, I came up with the brilliant idea that we could just walk down the street to a mall that I had seen on the way here.

Although my husband's enthusiasm was very limited, I was able to convince him that it would certainly do us good to take a few steps.

Okay... if you only look at the facts from here on, the following can be said:

We were the ONLY ONES walking for about 1.5 kilometers on the dilapidated sidewalk of a 5-lane city street in over 33 degrees Celsius and a humidity of 80%.

Emotionally speaking, I have to admit that my suggestion really strained my husband's mood.

When we got caught in a heavy rain shower on the way back, it didn't really contribute to improving his mood....

Only the subsequent enjoyment of "broiled chicken" with guacamole could smooth things over again.
