Foodtour in Chinatown

Argitaratu: 03.02.2024

Today I slept a little longer. You actually wanted to jog before the food tour, but I made myself a relaxing tea at 7 a.m. and then booked a bus tour to 6 places. Then I got ready, got a coffee on the way and then at 9:30 at the tourism center for the food tour. Another very entertaining guide who also gave me tips for the other places I will visit. We were a group of 15 people and I met a couple from America who I will see again on Sunday in Peru in Paracas. Then we took the bus to the city center. And it was very crowded. Pressed, squeezed and at what felt like 40 degrees. When we got out, everyone was completely soaked. But you don't let that get you down and the tour began. He showed us the food hall, which is also in a Netflix documentary. There you can find meat and fish (actually also guinea pig meat), vegetables and fruit and many other things. I then tried ceviche, the national dish of Peru, a mix of onions, lemon, potatoes and various types of fish. It was fruity, but raw fish like that at 11 o'clock in the evening wasn't really my thing. Then we went to the next department and there he introduced us to local products, including coca leaves and togkra (black mass that gives you a boost). Then we tried different fruits. There were very interesting flavors. Then we went out and walked around Chinatown for a bit. He showed us another spot where they serve Chinese street food. There I tried a steamed bun with a sweet filling. I couldn't taste what it was exactly, but it was delicious. And the sauce that went with it harmonized perfectly. Then he showed us a shop for churros, but in a slightly different form than I'm used to. There were three different ones and I ate one with chocolate filling and one with caramel. I paid 3 soles per churro (approx. 80 cents). Both tasted phenomenal. It's a shame that these shops are in the city center, otherwise I would have bought them more often for the evening. The tour was then over and most of the group went home. I stayed there and explored the city center.
