Bunratty Castle, Bridges of Ross und Loop Head im Nebel

Avaldatud: 10.09.2023

We actually wanted to go to Bunratty Castle & Folk Park on Friday, but we got “stranded” in the shopping center and then decided that it was just too hot for anything else. 😅 “Medium heat warning” according to the weather app, in IRELAND, in September! Incredible! I always say: “When angels travel 😇” So: bought a cake and went back to the motorhome, chillingo in the shade 😎

So we went there yesterday. Bunratty castle is an old castle and an open-air museum has been built next door: old farmhouses, a few farm animals, an old small town with shops, a school and a doctor, a small church, a mill, etc.

First of all, my suspicions were confirmed that we had already been here in 2014 🤣 There is a photo in the old photo album with Laura and Ingo in front of one of the colorful shops. I had to take a comparison photo (but where are we going to get the missing teenager? 🤪).

Well, whatever, after 9 years I couldn't really remember the details and the tour was still quite nice. However, we recently went to a similar “museum” in Denmark, so it didn’t really blow us away.

Since it was the last day we had the rental car, we spontaneously decided to drive to the coast again after the visit. After a quick google, we drove a little further south from the Kilkee Cliffs to the “Bridges of Ross”, which were originally 3 natural “bridges” that were washed into the rock by the sea. However, only one now exists; the others have already collapsed. We took a short lunch break in Kilrush on the way, so we didn't get there until just before 5.

The closer we got, the more cloudy the sky became and fog appeared. The sea was wild, the rugged rocks, the roar of the surf: impressively beautiful! 😍

After that I still didn't have enough and wanted to go to the tip of the peninsula, to the Loop Head lighthouse. Although it was only 5 km, the journey took a while because the cows have the right of way here! Two herds were driven across the road in front of us. 🐄

The further we moved forward, the thicker the fog became. The lighthouse could then only be seen vaguely. You could hear the sea but not see it. We walked quite a bit to maybe catch a glimpse, but the soup got thicker and thicker. It slowly became scary 👻 and also uncomfortable.

So return! It was now too late for a cozy evening in the pub (we still had over 1.5 hours of driving ahead of us), so a sandwich from Tesco had to suffice for dinner on the way. After a total of 10 hours we returned to the campsite and were eagerly awaited by our two furry monsters.
