Galera is a locality and a municipality in the northeast of the province of Granada, in Andalusia (Spain, Europe). It is part of the Huéscar Comarca and the natural region (and tourist area) of the Altiplano de Granada. It belongs to the judicial district of Huéscar, the judicial party no. 8 of the province of Granada, and is also part of the Mancomunidad de Municipios Comarca de Huéscar. Additionally, since 2020, it is part of the territory of the Geopark of Granada (also known as the Geopark of the Quaternary Northern Valleys of Granada).
It has a population (according to INE data from 2023) of 1,108 inhabitants and an area of 117.89 km². The Galera municipality comprises the core of Galera (the municipal capital) and the surrounding areas (pedanías and/or villages) of Alquería (the largest), Cortijo del Cura, Riego Nuevo, and Buenavista.
The beautiful parish church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Annunciation, dates from the 16th century (specifically from 1555), and is in the Granada Mudejar style. The patron saint of Galera, highly regarded and venerated by all its residents, is the Most Holy Christ of Expiration, who rests in the beautiful Baroque chapel inside the parish church. The patronal festivals in honor of the Most Holy Christ of Expiration are celebrated during the first weekend of August (usually lasting from Friday to Tuesday). Additionally, since 2022, a smaller fair in honor of the Most Holy Christ of Expiration is also celebrated at the beginning of May, coinciding with the traditional Crosses of May.
