At 11:15 a.m. I met the other travelers in the theater who had booked a tour with Royal Caribbean for today.
My excursion was called "Paleokastritsa, Lakones & Greek Meze" and bus number 8 was ready for it. We walked to our bus in beautiful sunshine and with the outside temperature already at 27°C and set off shortly afterwards. Some time later we reached the small seaside resort of Paleokastritsa. We stopped there for 20 minutes.
I used the time to look at the two beaches and visit a small supermarket. I bought a few regional specialties there: a small bottle of kumquat liqueur, candied kumquats, kumquat baklava and rose and kumquat Turkish delight. Did I mention that I like kumquat? Until now, however, I had only known the fruit itself.
We then drove along a winding and narrow road to Lakones. At the entrance to the town there is a traffic light with a sign saying that it can take up to 7.5 minutes before the lights change. This makes sense, because the whole town is only accessible by one lane and even then it is a challenge for buses.
Once we left Lakones behind us, we had a beautiful view of Paleokastritsa, the surrounding area and the sea.
Shortly afterwards we reached the town of Makrades, where we stopped at the Colombos Taverna. There we had a glass of wine and a meze plate. This included bread, a filled pastry, a meat skewer, cheese, sausage, salami and tzatziki. A light but tasty lunch.
Afterwards we drove to our last destination, the "Lazaris Distillery & Artisan Sweets" showroom. Here we were able to try and also purchase various sweets and alcoholic beverages.
Then there was an annoyance: we had to change buses because the air conditioning in ours was apparently not working properly. We could have easily managed the last ten minutes of the journey without it. So we sweltered in the heat for at least 15 minutes until the replacement bus arrived. It didn't seem to be any cooler than the other bus either.
Despite everything, we were back on the ship in time to watch the folklore performance "Colors of Corfu".
After dinner at the Windjammer, which included lobster and mussels, I listened to the String Reverie Trio and shared my newly purchased candied kumquats with the ladies.
