Rotorua

A bɔra kɛnɛ kan: 23.01.2024

I spent the night again at a Freedom Camping site and although it was quite far away from the sulfur fields, I think it smells of sulfur. But I don't know whether the smell is really there or whether my senses are playing tricks on me 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Today we go to Rotorua and right at the entrance to the city a real sulfur cloud comes towards me. So it definitely smells like sulfur here, it's not my imagination!

Even at the campsite, the smell of sulfur always wafts past. But it's not as bad as I imagined...

I'm heading straight through the city. And in the middle of the city you can often see cordoned off areas. Behind them are holes in the ground - sometimes with water, sometimes with mud - they all have everything in common - it smokes and stinks. If you're not that close, it's easy to bear, but if you're standing directly in such a thick sulfur cloud - phew, that's really violent and intense.

There is a park next to my campsite, and there are a lot of cordoned off areas with steam and bubbling water and mud. There are signs everywhere warning of boiling water with temperatures over 100°. Touching water is strictly forbidden.

At the end of the park a very large cloud of steam rises. I go closer and discover a lake full of boiling water. I've really never seen anything like that.

I think it will be an exciting 4 days!
