09/03/2023 from Kakadu NP to Katherine
It is very humid and warm at night, we have also stayed alone at the NP campsite and I have to admit, it was a bit spooky. But I only speak for myself. Today we also see wild animals again, at least 8 wallabies, plus 1 dead animal, 4 dingos plus a dead animal, an emu and lots of buffalo dung. But we only learn later that it really comes from the buffaloes.
We leave early for the rock paintings at Burrungkuy and see various interesting pictures of kangaroos, turtles and people. I have to get used to these representations, extremely tall and slim bodies, heads with only 2 eyes without a mouth and nose, female figures with large breasts sticking out to the left and right.
There are also other tourist groups here today.
The next rock painting spot at Nanguluwurr can only be reached by a 4 km return hike, the pictures are really worth seeing and clearer, fish and turtles and surprisingly a sailing ship of the whites who came here to hunt buffalo, some of the Aboriginal men volunteered to help. Seasonal work is mentioned.
On the way back we see a sign of buffaloes in the area and at least I keep an eye out for them, they are there, we can see that from the droppings that are lying around everywhere, I also see trampled high grass, by the way it is higher than me and I am very vigilant. I don't want to encounter such an animal.
We drive back, out of the NP, there are 2 more viewpoints, but they can only be reached by hiking and we have reached our daily target for today. It's about 30 degrees Celsius and we feel extremely high humidity.
And then they come, the heavy rainfalls, which make visibility almost impossible, cover roads with water and quickly turn them into floodways.
In the evening we reach Katherine again, look for a campsite and relax in the pool.
